Fox news released an article today citing Freethought Radio, broadcasted by Air America, as airing an atheism program with Ron Regan, son of the late President Ronald Regan as a guest speaker.
I’m an atheist. I do not believe there is anything beyond the world we live and breathe every day of our lives. When we die, we’re dead. Man do I hope I’m wrong!

I have a huge philosophical structure supporting my atheistic views. I believe that you should live a good life, not because Lucifer’s gonna kick you in the balls every day for all eternity, but because I believe that it’s every individuals moral responsibility to choose to do good, to be a force of justice. Every day we make choices and if you do more good than evil, than you are good person.
I believe that people have souls. Your soul is what gives you your ability to enjoy life. If you see a beautiful sunset and you feel joy, that’s your soul. If you love someone, that’s your soul. The choices we make in life direct the shape our soul takes and our soul can be good or evil and even change from evil to good or vice versa. I also believe some people are born without souls or things can happen in a person life that are so damaging that your soul can die but your body will still live. I believe that when you die, the energy that is your soul is released into the universe to become something else not necessarily another person or animal... just energy that might POSSIBLY end up as matter again. I’d like to come back as a CIA spy. I think that’s be awesome and you’d get a lot of chicks!
But I’m getting off topic. Like I said, I’m an atheist. You want to know more about my beliefs, feel free to ask.
I have mixed feeling about atheism radio. I think that “headline atheists” like Michael Newdow often do more to hurt the belief system than help it by making atheists look like extremist nut-jobs. Anyone is free to express their beliefs as they see fit but, if you’re going to wage war in the battle of ideas that is culture, you need to take a step back and ask if you’re doing more harm than good. As they say; if you’re going to fight in a battle of wits, come armed.

I’m certain it will be difficult for me to catch atheism radio. I’ve listened to Air America and, let me just say; WOW! I’m astounded that such a collection of deluded people can get a microphone. These broadcasters speak with ridiculous quips that are given without support and taken as fact by broadcaster and audience alike; “Everyone knows the Iraq war is all about oil.” Yeah? Ok. I’ll buy that you believe that. Why should *I* believe that? I can only stand it for so long before I have to turn it off I will not have “facts” feed to me without a reasoning. I will also not buy into an idea because “everyone” believes it call me a fashionable non conformist.

But Freethought radio is not Air America. Their name suggests something good; FREE THOUGHT which is in dire shortage these days in every arena; republicans, democrats, Christians, atheists not a single one of them has come up with a genuinely unique concept in my entire lifetime. The war of ideas is being won by the intellectually lazy the people who don’t really care. If “free thought” radio can be a venue by which free thinkers can broadcast to the world, I’m all for that!
But back on track again if atheist wants to go toe to toe with Christian radio in the realm of free expression they do have something going for them; they may not suck! Since they don’t exist yet it has yet to be determined whether they suck or not! I think most people who have heard Christian radio would say that, unquestioningly, it sucks, people only listen to it so they don’t feel bad about missing church. So there is potential in atheism radio, you listen because you’re curios, not because you feel guilty.

Trying to educate people about atheism though that’s another ballgame. There are as many views about atheism as there are sects of Christianity. I would stress, however, that as is so commonly maintained by Christians, atheism is NOT a religion. It is the absence of religion. The void left by blind faith in an atheist is replaced by pure reason. The warmth of that reason is as comforting, if not MORE comforting than faith; “My life is in my hands and my hands alone. I rule my fate and it is my choice to make my life what it will be.” In short; if I fuck up, my bad!
It may be cynical but I have a feeling that the atheists in radio are gonna drop the ball. They’re gonna start out by bashing religion which is the WRONG way to go. If religion is gonna die it doesn’t need atheists to dig its grave. It’s digging its own grave, or it isn’t, by its intrinsic virtue, or lack thereof. Then, the atheists are gonna slide political viewpoints into their radio program which is ALSO the wrong way to go. Atheism, by its very nature, can not exist as an entity consisting of blind followers. An Atheists eyes must be open and anyone susceptible to political indoctrination is not capable of being a true atheist.

If atheist radio wants to survive it should take a lesson from its competitors in radio. Explain the atheist concept on how life should be lived but do it in an engaging way. Maybe get a pop star to write a song or two about atheism. And most of all DON’T MAKE US LOOK CRAZY!
