Contributions to destroying gay acceptance

Friday night I was hanging out with my friend Heather. She jumped on my computer and said; "oh my god you have to see this!"

What followed was mind-boggling series of videos about Britney Spears, the world being 40 years old, incest, and horrible singing. These things came courtesy of the newest phenomenon to sweep the internet; Chris Crocker.

I've had this conversation with Blackthirt13en and his boyfriend before. They, as a gay couple, do not fit into the stereotype of homosexuality in modern media. They are not flamboyant. They do not have lisps. They are two men who happen to be gay.

When I think about the homosexual community I tend to think that most gay men are like my friends. Unfortunately, when society as a whole sees someone like Chris Crocker they point and say; "That is what gay men are." It's not societies fault. Society sees what it sees.

As a white heterosexual male who grew up in an upper-middle class area I've never really felt a need to be accepted. It's rare (but by NO means unheard of) for me to endure a lack of acceptance within any group. I try to imagine what it would be like if you were part of a demographic that is not accepted and think of it as terrible. If someone chose to exclude me for no other reason other than I was attracted to women I think I would break into a rage. It has to be tough to just accept that you are often unaccepted through no fault of your own.

Within culture, popularity is power. Anyone who achieves popularity has a choice to use their power as they see fit. Why would someone like Chris Crocker use his power to scrawl graffiti on the image of his own demographic?

Apparently he doesn't care about the impact he has on the strides homosexuals make every day in being accepted into the mainstream. Should he care? That’s debatable, I have no desire to use any popularity I achieve in my lifetime to crusade for the interests of my demographic as a whole, but I definitely don't intend on actively HARMING my demographic with my image... I just find it odd that he doesn't.
